What the Craft Carries
Magic in this world lives in the making, not the speaking
Ser worked on the blade for eleven nights. She didn't speak incantations. She didn't draw symbols. She worked the metal at the right temperature, at the right hour, with the right attention. By the twelfth night the blade held heat differently than iron should. It was done.
Imbuement in OpenRPG is craft, not performance. The power comes from sustained, skilled attention to an object — from knowing what you're asking it to carry and whether you have the skill to make it hold. The rules model that effort and its limits.
- Imbuement is a skill check, not a ritual — the practitioner's ability and the imbuement's difficulty determine the outcome.
- Each school of imbuement (evocation, warding, summoning, and so on) defines what kind of effect an object can carry.
- Imbuement degrades with use and time — maintaining enchanted items is a resource decision, not a given.
Core Imbuement Rules
Imbuement depends on physical contact, casting time, daily frequency, and rest-based recovery.
Physical contact required
An artifact is the conduit for primordial power. Breaking contact severs access to every imbuement it grants until contact is restored.
Not every artifact is portable
Some artifacts are fixed monuments such as standing stones, obelisks, or colossal crystal formations. They can only be used while the bearer is physically present and touching them.
Casting time and frequency
| Rule | Summary |
|---|---|
| Instant | Reaction-speed or appended to another action. |
| 1 Action | Uses the character’s full combat action. |
| 1 Minute | Sustained concentration outside combat. |
| 10 Minutes | Ritual-scale preparation for major effects. |
| Minor imbuements | At will, but still respect casting time. |
| Lesser imbuements | Faith Bonus multiplied by 3 uses per day. |
| Moderate imbuements | Faith Bonus multiplied by 2 uses per day. |
| Greater imbuements | Faith Bonus uses per day. |
| Supreme imbuements | Once per day regardless of Faith Bonus. |
- Imbuements require no material components beyond the artifact itself.
- Expended uses recover after a full rest unless a specific artifact demands extra ritual or meditation.
How to read uses per day
Uses per day are tied to the currently wielded or currently contacted artifact, not a global mana pool. If a bearer changes artifacts, they change what powers are available and how often those powers can be used.
If multiple artifacts are in play, the GM should require the bearer to declare which artifact is being used as the active conduit for that effect. Do not stack multiple artifact use limits into one shared casting total unless a specific rule later says otherwise.
Imbuements: Ancient Powers Awakened
Imbuements are primordial forces awakened through artifacts rather than conventional learned spellcasting.
Imbuements are not ordinary spells learned from study. They are ancient forces awakened through attunement to artifacts that resonate with the world’s oldest powers.
An artifact does not create this power so much as unlock it. The bearer becomes a conduit for one primordial aspect, channeling a force that predates civilization and often feels half-remembered rather than newly learned.
The Fourteen Ancient Aspects
Each artifact aligns with one primordial aspect, shaping the flavor and capability of the powers it unlocks.
| Aspect | Theme | Manifestation |
|---|---|---|
| Alchemy | Transformation of matter | Awakens dormant potential and reveals how substances want to combine. |
| Divination | Sight across time and probability | Perceives futures, truths, and hidden currents as echoes of timeless awareness. |
| Enchanting | Binding and resonance | Rewrites an object’s nature by touching its underlying song or true name. |
| Evocation | Elemental violence and raw force | Channels the primal storm so fire, lightning, and ruin answer as kin. |
| Illusion | Perception shaping reality | Makes near-possibilities briefly real by shifting what minds accept as true. |
| Necromancy | The threshold between life and death | Touches the animating spark and redirects it across the living and the dead. |
| Runesmithing | Primordial symbols and commands | Writes laws into reality using the first language of creation. |
| Summoning | Connections between realms | Reopens remembered paths so beings and forces can cross impossible distances. |
| Telekinesis | Will as force | Treats thought and motion as the same act, extending intent into matter. |
| Teleportation | Space made flexible | Folds location and traverses distances by reminding space it can be fluid. |
| Warding | Protection and preservation | Extends the universe’s first defensive impulse into shields and boundaries. |
| Forging | Shaping possibility into form | Gives concrete reality to ideal forms rather than merely crafting objects. |
| Transmutation | Fundamental change of essence | Rewrites what a thing is while preserving the continuity of its existence. |
| Shapeshifting | The fluid self | Treats identity and body as negotiable, letting new forms feel naturally true. |
Channeling Ancient Power
Using an imbuement is less like learned technique and more like awakening a remembered path.
Imbuements are awakened through attunement, not ordinary training. When the artifact recognizes a bearer, it opens dormant pathways that feel both foreign and deeply familiar.
Each artifact grants access to a set of powers from its aspect, with stronger artifacts unlocking deeper manifestations. The user does not memorize these powers so much as remember them when the conduit opens.
Using an imbuement often feels like brief vertigo or borrowed certainty: motions arrive older than the caster, words feel remembered instead of invented, and afterward the experience can linger like a vivid dream.
The Weight of Ancient Memory
Primordial power is never free; repeated use can reshape perception, identity, and the bearer’s relationship to the world.
Channeling primordial force leaves traces. Repeated use can alter dreams, perception, and the bearer’s sense of self as ancient memory presses against ordinary human consciousness.
Those who attune to multiple artifacts may remember impossible histories, feel nostalgia for places they never visited, or adopt habits that seem borrowed from something older than humanity.
Respect the conduit
Artifacts do not explain themselves. Push too hard, and the ancient memory behind the power can overwhelm the human identity trying to channel it.
